Technical seminar on EV Charging Standards
On 7 June 2017, Mr. Peter Bjork, Executive Director of EABC and Ms. Lena Friedrich, EABC Intern attended a technical seminar on EV Charging Standards at the Ministry of Science and Technology. Relevant Thai authorities also joined the meeting. The seminar were also attended by several of EABC members from the Automotive Working Group for example Mercedes-Benz and Continental.
Mr. Jacques Borremans from Charging Interface Initiative e. V. (CharIN e.V.) covering Asia and based in Hong Kong, introduced the mission and purpose of CharIN and pinpointed the association’s primary aims: the worldwide promotion and support of the Combined Charging System (CCS).
Today, three standards for charging battery-powered electric vehicles are implemented so far: CSS, CHAdeMO and GB/T. After pointing out the differences between these three standards, Mr. Borremans explained why the Combined Charging System should be established as the standard for charging EV of all kinds. Furthermore, as the CSS includes both the connector and inlet combination as well as all the control functions, a solution to all charging requirements would be provided.
The demand for EV will increase in the near future and in order to be ready for this growing market, the charging infrastructure must be well-engineered. By adapting the CSS as standard, it would become easier to update and expand the suitable charging infrastructure.
