Thailand revises visa rules – by Stephen Frost, Bangkok International Associates

Background: On 29 August 2014, two new regulations came into force regarding visa applications and renewals.
Regulation 327/2557 contains revised rules regarding visas and visa extensions, including retirement and tourist visas. Regulation 138/2557 is in effect a checklist of items to be submitted with the visa application, depending on the visa category under which the application is made. The rules distinguish between different categories of applicant, for example, those coming to Thailand for employment, investment, tourism, retirement, education or medical treatment, and the criteria applicable for visa issue/renewal depending on the visa category. There are no less than 32 separate categories of visa, with different criteria for each category.
