SUMMARY:Responsible Business Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF)\, in collaboration with the Thai-European Business Association (TEBA)\, the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce (TICC) and the European Chamber of Commerce Thailand (EABC)\, is hosting a Responsible Business Exhibition exclusively for the Thai private sector. This event will equip attendees with the knowledge and connections to adapt to the rapidly changing legislative and regulatory landscape around responsible business practices\, with a particular focus on remediation. \nIn light of incoming global legislation – including the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence (CSDDD)\, Reporting Directives (CSRD) and the German Supply Chain Act – the event will open with a short fire-side chat on what these regulations mean for businesses in Thailand. This discussion will touch on the legal frameworks behind these regulations and highlight practical steps that businesses can take to ensure compliance and maintain competitiveness on the international market. \nThe event will continue with a business exhibition that will feature relevant tools and services that businesses can engage with as they seek to advance their responsible business practices. The exhibition will open with the presentation of a business case study that TRF has recently developed in collaboration with Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) and a Thai company. The study focuses on the importance of running an in-depth diagnosis on existing responsible business practices to identify challenges and solutions for businesses looking to align with international regulations and guiding principles. The session will then follow with the exhibition\, in which up to three service providers will be allocated a stall that businesses can visit and gather information and create connections. \nThis event will be followed by the complementary multi-stakeholder conference ”Taking an ecosystem approach to labour rights and ethical recruitment in Thailand” that will be delivered in the afternoon of the same day in the same venue. This multistakeholder conference will include an in-depth discussion on the impact of the new global legislations on Thai businesses\, communities\, and workers alike. More information can be found here. \nBoth events are part of the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s project ‘Combating human trafficking and modern slavery through ecosystem support in Thailand. \nEvent Details:Date: Tuesday\, 15 August 2023Time: 10.30-12.30 pmVenue: Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park \nFore more information and registration\, please go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/responsible-business-in-thailand-a-business-exhibition-tickets-663041503987?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:AI and Machine Learning: Trends and Caveats Spanish-Thai Chamber and JFCCT on May 25 2023
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence has been with us for decades. Its uses have become widely embedded to make assessments\, predictions\, various decisions and has other functions. \nBut the way AI is programmed has become controversial. Ethical AI or similarly named approaches have become Guidelines and even legislation.   (Ethical AI is artificial intelligence which adheres to well-defined ethical guidelines regarding fundamental values\, including such things as individual rights\, privacy\, non-discrimination\, and non-manipulation). \nGenerative AI (eg OpenAI’s ChatGPT) became popularly known only in 2022. It is able to generate original looking content such as writing a term paper\, a speech\, doing a translation etc. However there is a dark side. False information (fake news) and other bad outcomes have occurred resulting in defamation suits and other remedies. In response\, some companies have devised preventions and filters.  A big question in academe is to ensure originality in student work. \nMachine Learning is understanding and building methods that let machines “learn” – that is\, methods that leverage data to improve computer performance on some set of tasks. Training data teaches the machine. It can be seen as a subset of AI. \n Join the Spanish-Thai Chamber and JFCCT’s Digital Economy/ICT group for a dive into understanding trends\, issues and developments. What are the main business and personal uses?  How\, broadly does the technology work? What are the ethical requirements and issues?  What should businesses do to benefit and operate ethically? \nOmniscien covers generative AI\, machine learning\, machine translation\, speech recognition\, optical character recognition\, natural language processing and file format conversions. \nSpeakers and Moderator:  AI including Generative AI; Ethical AI; Machine Learning \n\nPedro Uria – head of data sciences for True\nDr Pin Pin Tea-Makon\, Sasin School of Management\, lectures in AI and in Business.\nDion Wiggins – co-founder and CTO of Omniscien Technologies (Bangkok-based) (https://omniscien.com/ )\n\nModerator  Bob Fox\, Chair\, Digital Economy/ICT Committee and JFCCT Policy Co-Ordinator \nEvent Details: \nDate: Thursday\, 25 May 2023 \nTime: 15:30 – 20:00 \nLocation: Amara Bangkok \nRegistration: Link \n

SUMMARY:EU-Nepal Business Forum to be held in Kathmandu at Hotel Yak and Yeti during 8-9th May 2023.
DESCRIPTION:They are pleased to invite you to participate in the EU-Nepal Business Forum to be held in Kathmandu at Hotel Yak and Yeti during 8-9th May 2023. \nNepal’s potential for investment and trade has been steadily increasing over the years. The country’s diverse geography\, abundant natural resources\, and young labour force make it an attractive destination for investment in various sectors\, including manufacturing\, agro- processing\, energy\, tourism\, and other service sectors. Nepal’s growing middle class population and advantageous location between two rapidly growing economies\, India and China\, also provides investors with access to a large domestic market as well as a preferential market access to neighbouring countries. \nNepal has made remarkable progress towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in recent years and is set to graduate from its Least Developed Country (LDC) status by 2026. The graduation also signals Nepal’s readiness for business. However\, unleashing business opportunities will need additional efforts such as organization of business forums to enhance networking and collaboration between business communities and the public sector. \nThe EEC-Nepal has joined hands with the Government of Nepal\, EU Delegation in Nepal and GIZ to organize the first EU-Nepal Business Forum 2023. The business forum will provide a platform for EU and Nepali investors and governments together to explore opportunities that exist in Nepal and the EU member states. \nThe objectives of the Forum are to showcase business\, trade\, investment\, and FDI opportunities in Nepal; provide a platform for Government to Government (G2G)\, Government to Business (G2B) and Business to Business (B2B) dialogues and networking opportunities to promote trade and investment between Nepal and the EU; raise awareness of the various trading arrangements between the EU and Nepal; and explore/discuss policy and legal measures that can be undertaken to facilitate investment. \nThey are looking forward to seeing you in the business forum. Alternatively\, you can join the event virtually. Please visit their website for more information\, program agenda and registration. \nPlease register at: www.eunepalbusinessforum.com \nThey also request you to kindly circulate this information to your member organisations and any other associated organisations and request them for your participation \nPlease kindly do not hesitate to contact them for any further information – info@eunepalbusinessforum.com.

SUMMARY:Virtual ARISE Plus Roundtable Discussion Series: Key Trade Facilitation Issues within the Context of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA)\, 6-9 December 2022
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you and your members to participate in our flagship Roundtable Discussions on Trade Facilitation (RDonTF)\, which will be held virtually (via Zoom) from 6th to 9th December 2022. The detailed program/agenda is annexed to this Invitation\, for your reference. \nThis year’s RDonTF series will present and delve on ten specific trade facilitation issues within the context of the ATIGA vis-a-vis key developments in trade negotiations and trade agreements at the multilateral\, regional and bilateral levels as reflected in the policy briefs\, as follows: \nDay 1: 6 December (Tue)\,\n14:00 – 15:30H \nSession 1: ‘New Generation’ PTAs and ATIGA’s Structural Reform\nSession 2: ‘Digitalisation and E-commerce Facilitation’\nSession 3: ‘Trade and Sustainable Development’ \nDay 2: 7 December (Wed)\,\n14:00 – 15:30H \nSession 4: Regulatory Transparency and Private Sector Engagement                          Session 5: Streamlining of Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) and Removal of  Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs)\nSession 6: Dispute Avoidance and Dispute Settlement \nDay 3: 8 December (Thu)\,\n14:00 – 15:15H \nSession 7: ‘ASEAN Centrality’ and Rules of Origin                                                          Session 8: ASEAN Supply Chain Connectivity \nDay 4: 9 December (Fri)\,\n14:00 – 15:15H \nSession 9: Agricultural Trade and SPS Facilitation\nSession 10: Non-Agricultural Trade and TBT Facilitation \nMoreover\, this initiative aims to gather inputs and insights from the ASEAN business community on the impact of these new developments on businesses and their trade activities in the ASEAN region. The role of the private sector in the ASEAN economic integration is important as a key stakeholder in the process\, particularly in identifying impediments towards deeper regional economic integration and in designing regional strategies and initiatives. The AEC Blueprint 2025 recognises that greater involvement and more structured participation of the private sector will be beneficial to the achievement of its goals. \n‘Key takeaways’ from the RDonTF sessions will therefore be included in the ARISE Plus recommendations to ASEAN\, for consideration and inclusion in ongoing discussions\, future work programmes and strategic action plans. This will also help ASEAN policy-makers and negotiators in identifying priority issues/topics of importance for the ATIGA Upgrade. \nTo confirm your participation\, kindly register for the relevant sessions that you wish to attend by 2nd December 2022 using the following registration link: https://forms.gle/YfyJ4yikzQDiJtvJ8. \nPlease note that you are required to register for each of the sessions separately. Participation is completely free-of-charge. \nThe dedicated Zoom links and the relevant materials for the convening of these sessions will be provided to you upon registration. The sessions will be conducted/facilitated by the ARISE Plus team and experts. \nIf you have any queries or require additional information\, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Novia Firda\, ARISE Plus Senior Project Officer\, at novia.firda@asean.org and/or Ms. Maes Alconcel\, ARISE Plus Senior Expert\, at maes.alconcel@gmail.com
